"A Painting by a Haredi Artist Offered for Sale at $1.2 Million"
From the heart of Mea Shearim to New York’s grand galleries: Jerusalem of the Heart opens in Jerusalem in memory of the Haredi artist Huvy Elisha. ‘She brought Jewish art to the world in a way no one else could,’ says her grandson.
Today (Monday), the exhibition Jerusalem of the Heart opens in Jerusalem in memory of the renowned international Haredi artist Huvy Elisha, who passed away about six months ago.
Elisha’s family is launching the exhibition as the opening note of an international tour of her art. In these days of tension and division, they believe her works hold the power to bridge differences.
‘She brought the world of Judaica into painting and, over the past forty years, conquered the global art stage — including the most prestigious galleries in New York,’ says her grandson, Shlomi Elisha (27). ‘There are very few artists of this scale from the Orthodox world. She broke down those barriers and reached the highest places.’
Indeed, one of Elisha’s paintings is now being offered for sale at a professionally appraised value of $1.2 million. The work, The Spies (2003), once held a place of honor in the office of U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, who received it on loan for the embassy. Recently returned to the gallery, the painting is now available for purchase.
On the contrary — she brought Jewish art to the world in a way no one else could. Everything she created was in full accordance with faith and Halakha, and that spirit is visible in her works. With this exhibition, we wish above all to highlight her deep bond with the Land of Israel. Jerusalem of the Heart marks the opening of a global exhibition tour, through which we hope to share with the world the very heart of Jerusalem.
