At the age of 94, painter Ahava (Huvy) Elisha of Mea Shearim passed away. Her works of art, sold for hundreds of thousands of shekels, were created while she lived a life of modesty. Her funeral will take place at 16:00 at Har HaMenuchot
Baruch Dayan HaEmet. At the age of 94, painter Ahava (Huvy) Elisha of Mea Shearim has passed away. She was born in Jerusalem’s Bukharim quarter in 1927 and, due to her father’s business, wandered across Europe through Vienna, Prague, and London. During World War II she lived in England, where she endured the German bombings.
She recalled that on one occasion, she rode a bus and, moments after she stepped off, it was struck by a bomb — an event that spared her life. Following the bombings, the family relocated to the town of Torquay in Devonshire, whose landscapes would later appear frequently in her paintings.
Her artistic talent was discovered at a young age, and she was sent to the prestigious Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London, where she became the youngest student ever admitted.
Over the years, she sold her paintings at prestigious auctions, with reports noting sales in the hundreds of thousands of shekels.
At the age of 17, she married Eli, and in 1968 the couple returned to Israel. In time, she embraced religious observance and became a Breslov Hasid. In recent years, she lived modestly in Jerusalem’s Mea Shearim neighborhood. Her works were exhibited in a prestigious gallery on King David Street in Jerusalem.
The funeral will take place today at 16:00, departing from 7 Salant Street in Jerusalem to the Sephardic section of Har HaMenuchot.
